Kim holds a Master’s degree in Reading Education and has taken doctoral level courses in language arts education, children’s literature, and early childhood education. She has been teaching since 1986. Her teaching experience includes preschool through third grade in California, Washington, and Indiana and college undergraduates at Indiana University. She has been a consultant to elementary school teachers redesigning their language arts curricula. Kim has a Washington state home daycare license.

Kim has one daughter, Maya, born in 1997. Following Maya’s birth Kim began teaching preschool at a local daycare. This gave her the opportunity to continue teaching and bring Maya to work with her. Working in a home daycare/preschool situation made her appreciate the familial feeling, freedom of choice of teaching methods, and control of class size. The Learning Workshop was born in 1999.

Kim has authored two picture books, The Maybe Garden and Penny Wishes. She enjoys sewing, reading, dancing, walking her dog, and playing with Maya.

Her philosophy of how children learn, grow, and develop is based on what she has learned from her own students, the latest brain research, developmentally appropriate practice, and from the teachings of such educators as John Dewey, Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget, Lois Malaguzzi, Marie Clay, and Jane Healy. She strives to be a thoughtful educator, carefully designing children’s experiences that are consistent with her philosophy. She considers herself a member of a learning group as she learns along with the children and continues to be reflective about her teaching methods. She keeps her enthusiasm burning and her methods current by reading books and attending conferences.
